Fat Face have recently hit the headlines declaring a 39% increase in ecommerce sales, following the relaunch of their website. We were intrigued to find out what had changed to trigger such an increase in sales, so we carried out a brief usability review. Although we would always champion usability testing as the only true test of user experience, we wanted to share with you some of the things we like about the Fat Face website.

The temptation for many ecommerce websites is to simply follow convention by creating a site using a familiar design approach. Whilst we certainly wouldn’t advocate throwing away a tried and trusted ecommerce formula, we wanted to share some examples of how you can break convention and deliver an innovative and stylish shopping experience.

The five examples we have shared in this article utilise beautiful design and subtle but innovative interactions to enhance the user experience. We’ve broken down the core user journey from the landing page through to the checkout and provided example videos demonstrating an unconventional approach.

Appliances Online, or AO.com, as they are now known, have recently listed their shares on the London Stock Exchange and reached a staggering company value of almost £1.6bn.

How has this business, that was virtually unheard of a few years ago, become the leading supplier of white goods in the UK, while previously big names like Comet no longer exist? According to Matthew Lawson, Head of Conversion at AO.com, one of the reasons for their growth was introducing a user centred design approach to the business.

A/B Testing and why making assumptions in UX is a dangerous game

Between projects we like to set up A/B testing experiments on our website which test theories and ideas that come up during client work. Our latest experiment focused on how to encourage users to download a free guide by testing the differences between a large call to action box versus a smaller one. Rather than worry too much about getting the design and styling right, first we wanted to test out which would generate the most conversions and then adopt an ongoing agile approach to eventually lead us to the right solution.

Before you know it you’ve accidentally stuffed every single option into one gigantic menu, overwhelmed your visitors and deterred them from purchasing from your site.
